Position Summary:
This position is bound by the Social Work Code of Ethics. Reporting to the Manager of Family Services, the Child Protection Worker is responsible for assisting individuals, families and the community to develop life skills and acquire resources needed to enhance and improve social functioning. The Protection Worker will be expected to support and work closely with the Prevention department within the community served ensuring the successful delivery of protection services while actively liaising with community staff, leadership and most importantly membership. They will work with other program staff, community staff and leadership to promote the services as well as support proper referral pathways for the client group. This role further requires the Child Protection Worker to assess and interview clients, record accurate and detailed case notes and develop and support sustainable relationships with the community’s leadership, staff, membership and client base.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- Bachelor of Indigenous Social/Social Work or related discipline.
- Knowledge of First Nation policies and legislations, Saskatchewan Child and Family Services Act, the FSIN Child Welfare and Family Support Act, Policy and Procedures Manual for Family Centered Services (MSS), and/or similar legislation.
- Knowledge of various First Nations culture and practices.
- Must have a working knowledge of the principles and techniques of interviewing, case management, and crisis intervention.
- Able to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently.
- Good organization, time management and prioritizing skills.
- Elevated level of sound and independent judgement, reasoning and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to interact with people in a sensitive, tactful, diplomatic, and professional manner.
Conditions of Employment
- Must have valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Successful candidate will be required to submit a current criminal record check and vulnerable persons check.
- Ability to work flexible hours: will include evenings and/or weekends to support program and community needs.

Duties:
- Provide child protection services to children and families by acting as an Officer under the Child & Family Services Act, for the Province of Saskatchewan.
- Assessing the presence of risk factors to the children and families according to the Ministry of Social Services, Structured Decision-Making process.
- Investigate, and take authorized protective action when needed, cases of child abuse and/or neglect.
- Coordinates CPS investigation process related to the child and family.
- Apprehending children when necessary and providing voluntary placement services.
- Direct and aid individuals and families to available social services and resources within the community to aid in resolution to social and personal issues.
- Complete all case plans, documentation and legal agreements in accordance with the Family Centered Case Management Manual.
- Providing intervention services and problem-solving solutions to address the identified risk factors.
- Actively taking part with Prevention Services in family group conferencing, case conferences, and case planning.
- Referring to proper agencies for specific needs such as counseling services, addictions treatment, child assessment, etc.
- Preparing all required documentation for and attending Family Services Court as needed.
- Providing informational sessions regarding QBOW CFS Inc. to the community as directed.
- Interview clients to assess the situation and decide the types and level of services needed.
- Consult with doctors, therapists and medical professionals as needed.
- Plan assistive programs for clients.
- Maintain sustainable working relationships with community agencies, schools, law enforcement and courts.
- Maintain accurate and detailed case notes and records of each visit, conversation and any other form of communication.
- Attend scheduled department staff meetings and in-service programs.
- Participate in continuing education activities relevant to the field.
- Other duties shall be assigned as needed.
Community Relations
- Promotes QBOWCFS vision, mission, goals and objectives.
- Establishes and maintains a collaborative relationship between QBOWCFS and member First Nation community served to ensure optimum service delivery to the children and their families.
- Conducts presentations to communities and organizations on cultural supports and services.
- Acts in a professionally appropriate manner both when working and not working and is a positive role model for clients while representing QBOWCFS.
- Overtime may be needed.
- Travel may be needed.
- Other duties as deemed by the Executive Director.
